COLOSSUS — Elena Loffreno

Colossus (2025) is a research-based photobook that explores our coexistence with the inescapable persistence of wildlife — even in an urban setting. Through documentation, observation, and self-reflection, the project seeks a neighborly connection with the smallest and most overlooked inhabitants of New York City, including its outer boroughs. Birds, raccoons, insects, deer, fish, and even seals — these are the quiet community members who prevail and adapt alongside us.

By repositioning the wildlife I come into regular contact with as both subjects and companions, I bear the question of what it means to find kinship in non-human living bodies.

Mirroring its ecological ethos: The book is fully biodegradable and plantable. It is embedded with bergamot seeds (aka “bee balm”), designed to decompose, nourish, and grow alongside the environments it depicts.
